| Are classes offered all year round? Yes! The school year runs from September to June. Summer school is offered during July and August. How long do the classes last? Classes for children and teens run for 60 minutes and adult classes run for 80 minutes. What can I expect to learn in a flamenco class? All of Centro Flamenco's classes focus on developing technique in: footwork (zapateado) arms (brazos) turns (vueltas) hand clapping (palmas) finger snapping (pitos) castanets (palillos) starting from second year What do I need? Shoes Flamenco shoes are required. Orders are placed regularly from Spain through the Centro; speak with your teacher for more detailed information. The Dance Shop on Broadway also carries shoes, and if you are just starting out, character shoes or a basic heeled shoe with a leather sole are fine. Skirt Any long, wide skirt is fine initially. By mid-year, however, you should own a flamenco practice skirt. Castanets Quality castanets can be purchased through the Centro. Music Optional audio cassettes and CDs, made specifically for students, are available through the Centro. These contain a variety of Flamenco rhythms for home study. Is there a dress code? Leotards and tights must be worn and hair must be tied back during class. What happens if I'm late for class? Latecomers, a warm-up is important to prevent injury; please try to begin on time. Can I dance flamenco if I am pregnant? We have had pregnant women join our classes in the past. If you are thinking of dancing while pregnant, please consult with your doctor beforehand. Can men dance flamenco? You bet! Centro Flamenco welcomes anyone who is interested in the art of flamenco! |
